I never did pay much attention to your prior top joining method
But -- I thought your method of making and laying up rosette's with a UHMW jig was pretty clever.

Check out Taylor Factory Fridays....they have a pretty nice video on inlaying a Rosette! |

I've got the actual inlay part down with typical rosettes, I've just never worked with abalone before and wanted to see how to get the edges lined up, how to fill gaps, etc. with abalone and shell in general. Thanks. -j. |

Not sure if this will be helpful to you -- Brock Poling has a tutorial on making an abalone rosette here on the OLF. Also I thought the C&N book has a pretty good illustrated description. Hope that helps. |

Thank you very much Brock, very timely too as i'm about to make my rosettes, love the UHMW plate idea also! At one of the local hardware stores, they sell bottles of liquid shellac, anyone knows if this stuff is good or bad to protect the wood from CA glues for rosettes ? TIA, sorry if i'm hijacking. Yes, that should be ok. Just make sure it dries well before you use it. I also use the spray shellac sometimes if I don't have any fresh mixed up. |

Cool Brock thanks, i thought of asking you folks before doing anything foolish. now, i just hope they sell router bits of 1/16" and 1/32", would 3/32" be too big for this application ? |

I have three UHMW plates with pre routed to accept .063 4.93id abalone rosete and .04 bwb purfling each side and .095 4.93is abalone rosete .06 bwb and one for 1/8" abalone rosete with .06 bwb. really makes glue up easy. J. as far as fitting joints if it is a solid ring abalone seams darn near diaperar if you stage your color trasitions well, not so with MOP. There is no good filler th fill a seam gap. Tight edges with abalone will make near invisible seams, But you will always have visible seams with MOP Most of us buy pre radiused abalone or MOP rosetes. They come in the witdths I list above. They all have 4.93 ID. The OD varries based on width of shell. They come in usally 4 to 8 pieces to make a 360 ring. |
